Private one-on-one piano lessons are offered once a week regularly. Each lesson is 30/45/60 minutes in length depending on student’s age and level (This will be discussed with parents in the interview). The monthly tuition is a fixed rate - 4 to 5 lessons depending on the number of weeks in the month. Missing lessons will be made up only if the student was ill or had family emergency. In such cases, teacher must be notified at least 24 hours in advance, AND also doctor’s slips or proof of the emergency event must be provided. If student has reasons that the lesson must be missed other than illness or emergency, student may swap lesson with another student upon their agreement (Swap list will be given after the initial interview). In such cases, Teacher must be notified 24 hours in advance for any change of lesson day/time. There is no makeup and no refund for tardiness, no-show, or lessons that are cancelled without 24 hours notice.
Each student is allowed to have up to 3 absence quotas per term* in which make-up lessons can be scheduled if legitimate (meet all requirements mentioned above). If the student has used up the absence quota, any extra absences will still be charged and the teacher has no obligation to offer make-up lessons. (*Term: January-June/September-December).
Teacher may cancel/reschedule a lesson due to professional activities (music conference, performances, tour, etc). Teacher will notify the student and makeup these missing lessons.
There are two occasions that teacher will be on vacation: Christmas and summer. Student will be notified about the teacher’s schedule ahead of time. Make ups can be done for these missing lessons upon request.
All legitimate missing lessons should be made-up within the month of the missing lessons.
Parents and siblings are welcome to observe the lessons QUIETLY.
Monthly payment is expected by the first lesson of the month. A late fee of $10 will be applied if tuition is not received by the 15th of the month, and lessons will be suspended until the balance is cleared. The monthly tuition is a fixed rate - 4 to 5 lessons depending on the number of weeks in the month.Cash and checks are acceptable. Please write checks payable to Virginia Tsoi.
For missing lessons due to student’s illness, emergency, teacher’s professional activities or vacations where makeup lessons are scheduled, payment is due at the beginning of the month of the original lesson time. (eg If the student misses a lesson on 10/27 due to sickness and the makeup lesson is scheduled on 11/4, the payment for October would still include the tuition for 10/27, where the payment for November would not include the makeup on 11/4)
Teacher reserves the right to adjust tuition rate in which student will be notified ahead of time. Paid lessons are non-refundable.
In order to begin lessons, all students MUST have at least one of the following:
- Grand Piano, and/or
- Upright acoustic piano, and/or
- Full size (88-key) keyboard with WEIGHTED KEY
Recommendation can be given for those who are planning to purchase or rent the instrument. For those who do not already have the instrument, renting an acoustic piano is highly recommended.
Student is expected to have a well-maintained acoustic piano at home for practice purpose. Electronic keyboards may work at the beginning; however, an acoustic piano is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED. Beginning students who plan to continue with further study should have an intention of purchasing an acoustic piano.
Students are responsible for purchasing books and sheet music. Teacher will inform the student what material is needed. Most method books can be purchased at local music stores or online (eg http://www.sheetmusicplus.com)
Practice is an essential part of the learning process. Students are expected to maintain a good daily practice habit. Positive parental involvement is highly encouraged. Parents and teacher should maintain sufficient and consistent communication. Please allow time for brief meetings with the teacher when it is necessary so that parents and teacher can assess student’s progress together.
Students are highly encouraged to participate in student recitals. There are multiple performance opportunities throughout the year. For all students' recitals, a registration fee might be required (in order to cover expenses including venue rental, certificates, trophies...etc). Details will be given in the lessons.
